Welcome to the wonderful world of books!

Our next book pick – Freak the Mighty

March 13th, 2009 by Mrs. M~ in Club Happenings · 1 Comment

Our final book for the year is Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. Please stop by room 22 to check out a book. Our normal meeting date would be April 10, but we do not have school that day. Instead, we will pick a date in late April or early May to meet after school. During that meeting, we will discuss the book, watch the movie version, and have a pizza party! More details on that will come later.

Have a great spring break; take some time to READ! :-)

Check out the book blog from National Geogaphic called “DogEared.” It has some great book reviews! Some of the books are a little “young” for middle school, but some are right on target.

February 13th, 2009 by Mrs. M~ in Uncategorized · No Comments

The Reading Club met this morning to discuss Tangerine. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the book and about what does and does NOT make a “perfect brother!”

Our next book choice will be any book by Gary Paulsen. We will meet to discuss the books on March 13. There are many Paulsen books available at the WMS library and the Regional library–see me for a list.

Happy reading! :-)

Student book review – The Brethren

January 8th, 2009 by Mrs. M~ in Book Reviews · 1 Comment

The Brethren by Beverly Lewis
Reviewed by Bethanie N.
WMS grade 8

The Brethren, the end of a trilogy, is a book with romance and mystery.
Anne, an Amish girl at the courting has given up her art. The art that she had so hard tried to keep from the People (other Amish) until her father the Preacher found out. Now she is forced by her father to finally join the church. Plans change when Anne meets a cute Englisher by the name of Ben, of whom she is suddenly attracted to. Unfortunately it is prohibited to see an Englisher. Secretly Anne and Ben start seeing each other behind her father’s back.

While Anne and Ben are sneaking out, Anne’s friend Ester is having problems of her own with her troubled husband Zeke. Her violent and rough husband has contacted the police and told them that he killed his brother, Isaac, all those years ago as a boy. While Zeke is locked in prison during the case, Ester is back at home, having already been shunned and with 3 kids. She has nobody to look after them all.

In this novel many past and future questions will be answered. I loved this book I just couldn’t’t put it down! I liked the book because I just love romance books but it gives a nice twist with an unsolved crime from years ago. I think that middle school girls would more likely like this that the boys but I still recommend it to anyone who has a knack for adventure. I also suggest that you read The Preacher’s Daughter and The Englisher first.
